Salmon Panel, 1996

Wayne Chabre
(American, born 1947)

Location: Highland High School, Cowiche

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Wayne Chabre created the bronze relief sculpture Salmon Panel as a meditation on the spirit of salmon. He sees salmon as a metaphor for aspiration and stamina. He notes, "In recent years I have followed with increasing concern the plight of the endangered salmon in our region. As co-inhabitants of the Northwest, humans are inextricably caught up in the life cycle of this fascinating creature. Every drop of rain that falls where the land leans to the Pacific Ocean has a role to play in the life of both salmon and people. We share a common destiny, and Northwest residents have been at least partly defined by the salmon stories of the cultures that have preceded us in this place."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Highland School District.
