Stellar Dog II, 2000

Betz Bernhard
(American, born 1952)

Location: Crescent Heights Elementary, Tacoma

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Betz Bernhard created the ceramic sculpture Stellar Dog II using a plaster mold to cast the clay. She then painted the form using acrylics and copper leaf. The stars painted on the side reference the "Lupus" constellation, which means wolf. She notes, "Some of my best friends have been dogs… I've always been fascinated and moved by the body language of dogs. They are ideal subjects for sculpture."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma School District.
