Division: Dominoes, 1981

Craig Lemley
(American, born 1952)

Location: Central Washington University, Ellensburg

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'Divisions: Dominoes' is part of artist Craig Lemley's series of drawings featuring steel fence posts. He notes that fence posts function as both an artistic subject and object. The idea of a fence post brings to mind the division of spaces and separation of physical areas. As an object used in his composition, the fence post also becomes a formal element, dividing the picture plane. He created this piece by building up areas of dark charcoal. He then erased areas of the charcoal to form the image using erasers, sandpaper and felt.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Central Washington University.
