ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Late Pacific Northwest artist James Mattingly developed the printmaking program at Western Oregon University, and his body of work explored the creative possibilities of intaglio printing. Lummi Lady is based on a historic photograph by Edward Curtis and is representative of Mattingly's richly detailed and incisive portraits which explore "the dignity of man."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Parks and Highline Community College.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Northwest artist James Mattingly (1934-2006) primarily created richly detailed intaglio prints. Based in Oregon, Mattingly founded the printmaking program at Western Oregon University, where he taught from 1968 to 1994. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from San Jose State University.
