Chicken Checkerboard, 1998
Jean Mandeberg
(American, born 1950)
Location: The Evergreen State College, Olympia
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Chicken Checkerboard is part of a series of sculptural game boards created by artist Jean Mandeberg based on traditional games like checkers, backgammon, and parcheesi. Interested in how repetitive geometric shapes prompt personal interpretations, the artist notes, "I hope that the forms provide a physical record of my experience: living with risk, paying attention as the rules change, overcoming fears, and finding things that link the past with the present." This piece was made by collecting and assembling found metal pieces.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with The Evergreen State College.
