Bride's Quilt, 1987

Alice Van Leunen
(American, born 1943)

Location: English Crossing Elementary, Arlington

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Bride's Quilt is part of a series of paper constructions by artist Alice Van Leunen. These works are based on the patterns and motifs of traditional pieced fabric quilts. This artwork is made up of different Japanese lace papers that are folded using Origami folding techniques. The composition creates an angled pattern, as if a corner of the quilt has been folded over. The artist notes that this piece references the "delicate laciness of the bridal trousseau." A trousseau can refers to a bride's linens, wedding dress, and dowry.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lakewood School District.
