Bayside, 1994

Stephen Yates
(American, born 1952)

Location: Mukilteo School District, Everett

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Stephen Yates composed the painting Bayside to highlight a sense of movement. Views of the mountains, as seen across the water in much of the Pacific Northwest, inspired the background landscape. The clouds, energetic brush marks, and streaks of color suggest moving air, currents of energy, and flame. The artist notes, “It is my intention to create a painting that is both visually exciting and suggestive of the dramatic natural world with the more unseen levels of energy and contemplation incorporated into it. It is dream-like in that we often are able to incorporate imagery from various levels of our consciousness into dreams.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Mukilteo School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist Stephen Yates creates paintings with bold, expressive strokes and abstract imagery. Inspired by landscapes, under water life, and the cosmos, his work investigates color relationships and the interaction of forms. Yates lives and works in Port Townsend, on the Olympic Peninsula in Northwestern Washington.
