The "A", 2001

Anne Grgich
(American, born 1961)

Location: Washington State Arts Commission, Federal Way

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The "A" is a mixed-media painting created by artist Anne Grgich. This piece is part of her body of mixed media artworks incorporating jigsaw puzzle pieces. A self-portrait, this piece represents a moment of personal accomplishment for the artist. She notes, "Because my working methods are very individual, and my techniques and aesthetic are very much self-created and inspired, my feeling that this piece represents a culmination or synthesis of my mixed media 'self-teaching' of the last few years makes me want to recognize this feeling of achievement in the subject of the work itself." Thus, she used a discarded marquee letter "A" to symbolize her success.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Federal Way School District.
