Caryn Friedlander
(American, born 1955)

Location: Benjamin Franklin Elementary, Vancouver

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

After is an expressive and colorful abstract painting by artist Caryn Friedlander. It is part of her 'Scape' series of works. 'Scape' refers to a scene or view, and to the notion of escape. She notes, "Occasionally derived from the experience of a real locale, my work is more often the result of coaxing materials (and maintaining faith), until color and value begin to speak the language of space and light. The images most often resolve for me as places of solace and rest, where I might dwell in comfort and find stimulus."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Vancouver School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Northwest artist Caryn Friedlander creates expressive abstract paintings. Her art is informed by the natural world, a fascination with water, her extensive garden, and the art materials themselves.

Friedlander was born in New York City and came to the Pacific Northwest in her early twenties, on a whim. She received a Master of Arts in East Asian art history (1987) and a Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing (1991) from the University of Washington in Seattle. She lives and works in Bellingham, Northwestern Washington.
