She Pushing Off, 1998

Lisa Sheets
(American, born 1963)

Location: Mountain View High School, Vancouver

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Lisa Sheets sourced the images for the collage She Pushing Off from magazine ads from the 1940s and a friend's family photographs. She notes, "There is a sense of floating images or a dream-like quality. The women in a boat image is one I use frequently because it has many connotations: journey, independence, moving through water, which is a symbol of life force, and birth." This piece is part of a group of layered collages featuring different eras of 20th century women.

Sheets created this artwork during an artist residency in Sarasota, Florida.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Evergreen School District.
