Salmon VIII, 1987

Bruce Amstutz
(American, born 1949)

Location: Washington State Patrol - Training Division, WSP Academy, Shelton, Shelton

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Salmon VIII is part of artist Bruce Amstutz's series of salmon drawings. These works suggest movement and the interplay of light and dark in water. In this piece, he combines charcoal and conte crayon with gestural strokes of Japanese sumi ink. He notes, "I hope that the marks and lines themselves convey a kind of vigor, movement and necessity that I am trying to give to the salmon – as though the same natural force that drives a salmon to return to its source has generated them."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Washington State Patrol.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
