Arctic Goose Transcendence, 2017
Sean Gallagher
(Inupiaq, born 1977)
Location: Thomas Jefferson High School, Auburn
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Arctic Goose Transcendence by Sean Gallagher (Inupiaq) represents how an Arctic Goose flock sticks together as the world shifts, witnessing many changes. Becoming a father inspires Sean's work through imaginative depictions and stories of Arctic animals. He notes, "Many people and animals are impacted by environmental and social issues... [art] reaffirms the importance of holding space for future-gazing, imagining, and knowing the ways of ancestors."
This artwork is part of a curated collection by Asia Tail in April 2024 for three Federal Way Public Schools in South King County. Asia chose graphic works that are as bold and diverse as the students, by artists with ties to South Puget Sound. Images of language, people, and the natural world create a poem for this place where students live and learn. She notes, "School is a place where we can connect with new families. And families are always strongest when working together."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Federal Way Public Schools.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sean Gallagher (Inupiat) is a visual artist and traditional boatbuilder of skin-on-frame kayaks. His art is influenced by traditional teachings and current experiences, with a reverence for the future. Themes include Environmental Justice, making visible endangered traditional works, and the experiences of essential workers. Becoming a father inspires Sean's work through imaginative depictions of arctic animals. He notes, "Although a lot of loss and hardships are currently being experienced, it is important that art engages youth and impacted communities to create safe spaces for them."
Carving masks under the influence of elder Larry Ahvakana (Point Barrow, Inupiat) increased Sean’s skillset and connections to fine art. He also learned carving from his uncle and other Indigenous visual artists. He is based out of White Center, just south of Seattle in Western Washington.
