Influential artist Joan Brown created expressive and symbolically resonant figurative paintings. She was a leader in the Bay Area Figurative Movement and a professor of art at University of California, Berkeley.
Born in San Francisco, Brown received Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute. She was the recipient of awards by the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship and many other honors.
