Art in Public Places - Artwork Selection Committees

Local Art Selection Committees work with Arts Commission staff to select an artist from the Public Artist Roster, review artwork proposals, and make final artwork selection decisions.

Art in Public Places program staff meet with the Art Selection Committee three times to select an artist.

  • The first meeting focuses on orienting the Selection Committee to the program and developing artwork criteria;
  • At the second meeting, the Selection Committee reviews four images each from approximately 200 rostered artists;
  • At the third meeting, the Selection Committee reviews a short list of selected artists (15-20 artists, 10 images each) and selects an artist.

Once the Selection Committee has selected an artist, the artist, Art Selection Committee, and staff meet three times.

  • The first meeting consists of a site visit and review of the artwork criteria;
  • The artist’s preliminary proposal is reviewed at the second meeting; and
  • At the third meeting, the artist’s final proposal is reviewed.

If the proposal is accepted, the artist fabricates and installs the artwork, working with Arts Commission staff, a structural engineer, and a general contractor as required.
