General Information

Information on Legislation relating to Art in Public Places Program is included in the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) for Art in Public Places (PDF) and Washington Administrative Code (WAC) for Art in Public Places (PDF).

ArtCare: A Collections Management Framework for the Washington State Art Collection (PDF) outlines the Art in Public Places Program’s collections management policies and procedures, including those on artwork conservation, deaccession, and rights and reproductions.

These resources are updated regularly but may not be the most recent available. Please consult with an Art in Public Places staff member to confirm.

For Partner Agencies

The Handbook for Public Schools (PDF) and Handbook for State Agencies, Colleges, and Universities (PDF) outline the committee process involved in acquiring works of art for our partner agencies. They are intended to be used as guides to the Art in Public Places facilitated process for members of local art selection committees.

The Sample Interagency Agreement (PDF) is an example of the contract between the Washington State Arts Commission and our partner agencies addressing the process of acquiring works for the State Art Collection and their ongoing stewardship. The Partner Agency Contact Sheet (DOC) contains information for the people we will need to contact within the partner agency and at the artwork’s site.

For Artists

The Public Artist Handbook (PDF) details what is to be expected from an artist selected to create a site-responsive work of art for a state agency, school, college, or university.

The Washington State Arts Commission employs two contracts during the process of commissioning artworks for the State Art Collection. The Sample Proposal Development Contract (PDF) is the template for the contract the artist first enters into with the Arts Commission once selected by the partner agency’s Art Selection Committee and it covers the proposal phase of the project. The Sample Commission Contract (PDF) is the template for the contract we utilize for the fabrication and installation of the artwork.

Before a project is complete, the artist will fill out the Detailed Artwork Form (DOC), and the Technical and Maintenance Form for 3D Work (DOC) or the Technical and Maintenance Form for 2D Work (DOC). All documents should be carefully reviewed with the artist’s project manager.
