Public Artist and Curator Rosters
ArtsWA uses two rosters of professional resources to acquire artworks: the Public Artist Roster and the Curator Roster.
Public Artist Roster
The Public Artist Roster is a pre-qualified roster of professional visual artists eligible to create site-responsive works of art for K-12 public schools, colleges, universities, and state agencies through a process facilitated by Art in Public Places (AIPP) project managers. Funding is generated from ½ of 1 percent of the state’s portion of construction costs for state buildings.
Every 3 years AIPP holds a competition to select artists for inclusion on the Public Artist Roster. A panel reviews and recommends artists based on a number of factors including an artist’s experience and technical abilities. The panel includes artists and arts professionals, and changes each time a competition is held.
The Board of Commissioners approved the current Public Artist Roster at its August 2015 meeting.
The Curator Roster provides a pre-qualified list of curators to work with AIPP project managers and local art selection committees to recommend works of art for their site, acquired as part of the State Art Collection. Funding is generated from ½ of 1 percent of the state’s portion of construction costs for state buildings. Curators accepted to the roster are approved for a 4-year term.
The curator helps ensure that the artwork is relevant to both the community context and the physical environment. The curator coordinates with AIPP staff; meets with the committee; researches artists and works of art; prepares the artwork recommendation presentation and support materials; and coordinates the purchase, delivery, and installation of accepted artworks.
The Board of Commissioners approved the current Curator Roster at its November 2016 meeting:
