The Washington State Arts Commission works to improve community vitality and aesthetics by supporting arts, arts education, research, statewide initiatives, and special projects.

 

For over 40 years, Washington State Governor's have recognized the valuable role that artists, and arts and heritage supporters and organizations have played in our state through the Governor's Arts and Heritage Awards.

 

Washington joins 40 other states in establishing a Poet Laureate.

 

National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpiece funding has allowed a visionary set of screen prints by artist Jacob Lawrence to travel the state.

 

The Creative Vitality Index (over in the Resources section) is an ongoing project which measures the health of the creative economy in Washington State and the City of Seattle.

 

In 2005, Governor Chris Gregoire announced the formation of the Washington State Quarter Advisory Commission. The Commission, affectionately dubbed SQAC (pronounced squawk) by Mike Gregoire Honorary Chairman, was tasked with developing the narrative design concepts that were presented to the U.S. Mint and ultimately selected by the Governor and revealed in 2007 as the Washington State quarter.
