Central Cascades Geotourism projectFrom festivals to fly-fishing the Central Cascades Geotourism project will highlight the rich cultural tapestry of this region. People throughout Washington and Oregon nominated local theaters, festivals, arts events, scenic exploration, historic lodges, working orchards, cultural sites, and more for inclusion in the Central Cascades Geotourism project.
The National Geographic Society and its local partners are producing a Geotourism MapGuide and website of the Central Cascades, and sought nominations from residents for locations and experiences - they recieved over a thousand and are working on narrowing the list for the final map.
The purpose of the Central Cascades Geotourism project is to promote travel that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, and heritage, and the well-being of its residents.
The Central Cascades MapGuide will be a two-sided map-brochure that conveys geotourism information, sites, and experiences. The MapGuide’s content meets National Geographic standards of editorial quality and credibility, and the locations, experiences, and themes are proposed by local communities. Roughly 150 of the most unique natural, historic, and cultural assets will be included on the map.
The website, due to its interactive nature, will highlight twice as many sites and experiences. The project will help market this region to the world through the National Geographic brand and bring in tourists who not only spend money, but also respect the unique environment and culture. |
