New Artwork InstallationLituus by John Rogers was recently installed in the lower winter garden of the Rainier Building on the campus of Pierce College in Steilacoom.
In mathematics, a lituus is a spiral in which the angle is inversely proportional to the square of the radius (as expressed in polar coordinates).The curve was named by Roger Cotes in a collection of papers entitled Harmonia Mensurarum (1722), which was published six years after his death.
Lituus is a spiral of curved metal pipes and dichroic glass, a type of glass that contains layers of metal oxides which change color depending on perspective. An article on the installation, Rainier Building Glass Art - Glass spiral "Lituus" makes its debut by Justin Martin appeared in The Pioneer, the student newspaper of Pierce College.
Artwork acquired through Washington State’s Art in Public Places program becomes part of the State Art Collection - a collection of over 4,600 works of art located at state agencies, public schools, colleges and universities throughout the state.

United Way of King County has released a new report Volunteer Management: Challenges and Opportunities Facing Nonprofits. Written by a leading expert in the field of volunteer management, the report is based on results from a United Way of King County survey that included more than 600 respondents from organizations across King County. The analysis addresses challenges of volunteer engagement, hopeful signs, and implications for organizations, leadership, and funders.
Grants / OpportunitiesThe Project Support grants deadlines for FY 2011 Round Two, is October 4, 2010, for projects taking place between January 1, 2011 and June 30, 2011.
Artist Trust's Grants for Artists Projects (GAP) provide support for artist-generated projects, which can include (but are not limited to) the development, completion or presentation of new work. GAP awards are open to artists of all disciplines and offer a maximum of $1,500 for projects. A panel comprised of artists and arts professionals selected from around Washington State select GAP recipients. Deadline: 06/25/10.
4Culture is accepting applications for Heritage Collections Care Grants. Established to assist King County heritage organizations as they address the ongoing need to preserve their collections for future generations, the program gives priority to basic collections issues and provides institutions with support to evaluate collections needs and to implement resulting recommendations. Deadline: 06/30/10.
Mighty Tieton is sponsoring its first juried art exhibition. Tieton is a small town with big ambitions, and so this year's theme is "Small is big." Each artwork must be no larger than 10" x 10" x 10" including frame or case. Flat art is welcome, too. All visual media including architectural models, letterpress printing, crafts, photography, paintings, books, sculpture, prints, whatever. No geographic limit. All accepted entries will be published in a catalogue. Deadline: 07/05/10.
The United States Mint is inviting artists to be a part of American history through coin design. The Artistic Infusion Program provides gifted artists the opportunity to contribute creative and beautiful designs for coins that will be enjoyed by all Americans. Honorariums are $2,000 for each design submission and $5,000 for each selected design. Deadline: 07/06/10.
WESTAF is accepting applications for the Visual Arts Touring (VAT) grant program. The VAT program is a competitive grant program that awards up to $50,000 to visual arts organizations to support the preparation and touring of visual arts exhibitions of important regional artists. Projects must take place between October 1, 2010 and September 30, 2012. Deadline: 08/01/10.
The National Park Service is accepting applications for the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program to assist communities in conserving waterways, preserving open space, and developing trails and greenways. Deadline: 08/01/10.
Northwest Film Forum is accepting submissions for the Dressed to the Nines film challenge. The project is open to all levels of skills and experience. Deadline: 08/11/10.
The Arts of Kenmore has issued a call (PDF) for the juried Kenmore Art Show. The show has continued to grow in size and quality each year. Deadline: 08/13/10.
The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation will award Fitch Mid-Career research grants of up to $15,000 to mid-career professionals who have an academic background, professional experience, and an established identity in historic preservation or related fields. The Foundation will also offer the Richard L. Blinder Award, a biennial grant of up to $15,000 for the best proposal exploring the preservation, additiond, and renovation. Deadline: 08/15/10.
Grumbacher paint is looking to hire acrylic painters to teach two-hour workshops at a major retailer in locations across the United State and Canada. Artists must be capable of demonstrating a still life, landscape, seascape, and floral. Participants will conduct approximately one to four workshops per store, per month and the artist will have flexibility in scheduling. Compensation is $100 per workshop, and teaching materials will be provided to the artist at no cost. Employment / Volunteer / InternshipsThe Wing Luke Museum is seeking an experienced writer/administrator to generate significant grant funding resources and maintain adequate financial oversight. The Grants Manager (PDF) is responsible for managing the Museum's grants support plan; building relationships with granting organizations; researching, developing and writing grant proposals; meeting grants timelines; overseeing grant production; tracking and administering grant contracts.
Events / Workshops / ConferencesShoreline - Auditions for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of King Arthur’s Quest will be held Monday, June 21 from 4 to 6 pm in the Shoreline Room at Shoreline Center. There are roles for students currently enrolled in grades K through 12.
Seattle - The Burke Museum will present the winners of the 2010 International Conservation Photography Awards (ICP Awards) this summer in an exhibit of more than 75 images. Photographers from around the world were invited to submit conservation-themed photographs.
Seattle - City Arts presents the Noise for the Needy 2010 Festival - NOW through June 12 with proceeds to benefit Teen Feed. Featuring over 60 bands including The Album Leaf, Delta Spirit, John Vanderslice, Visqueen, Thunderheist, The Maldives, Horse Feathers, Tiny Vipers and more at locations throughout Seattle.
Port Townsend - Centrum is presenting The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes the week of July 3 - 10. Fiddle Tunes is a week-long, total-immersion workshop with a hallmark of presenting an expansive array of regional fiddle styles. Workshops, classes, band labs, tutorials, dances, concerts, singing, open jams, hat parties – all contribute to a week of living, learning, and jamming with masters of North American fiddling traditions.
Deception Pass State Park - The Washington State Folk Arts in the Parks program is presenting Salish Sea Native American Cultural Celebration with the Samish and Swinomish Tribes at the Bowman Bay Picnic Area on Fidalgo Island on June 19 from 11 am to 4 pm. Music, storytelling, hands-on arts demonstrations, and free canoe rides. |
