New CommissionersGovernor Chris Gregoire recently reappointed Commissioners Leann Johnson of Vancouver, Maureen Greeley of Olympia, and Stephen Sneed of Seattle.
Additionally, Governor Gregoire appointed two new Commissioners:
Elizabeth Conner of Vashon. Conner is a self-employed artist. She serves on the services to artists committee at the College Art Association, and was a member of the Washington State Arts Commission statewide committee and president of the board of trustees for Vashon Allied Arts.
Robert Glatzer of Spokane. Glatzer is a film critic for Spokane Public Radio, programming consultant to international film festivals, and author. He was a member of the Spokane Arts Commission, Spokane Community Development Board, Artist Trust, and chair of the Governor’s Small Business Improvement Council.

OpportunitiesArtist Trust is presenting a workshop on How to Build a Strong Grant Application, Tuesday, August 26 from 7 to 9 pm at the Paradise Theatre School in Chimacum. Monica Miller, Artist Trust's Director of Programs, will present information on how to apply for grants successfully. Along with receiving detailed information on how to prepare all grant-application materials, participants will learn how to access the vast array of grant possibilities available to Washington State artists. The workshop is free but pre-registration is required. Please contact Jay Steingold, Programs Assistant, to register.
The Spokane Arts Commission has announced an open call of nominations (PDF) for the 2008 City of Spokane Arts Awards. The 17th Annual Arts Awards will be presented in six categories during a public meeting of the Spokane City Council Monday, October 6 at 6 pm. A reception will be held following the presentation to honor this year’s nominees and recipients. Deadline 08/29/08.
The Mayor's Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs in Seattle is presenting a workshop on working with artwork fabricators, Getting it Made, Tuesday, September 9 from 6 to 8 pm at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in Seattle. Three seasoned public art professionals will talk about the ins and outs of employing a fabricator to help see a project from concept to construction. Public artist Pam Beyette, fabricator Larry Tate, and public art conservation specialist Tiffany Hedrick will share tips about how to select and work with a fabricator to create a lasting public artwork. There is no cost to attend, however, advance registration is required. To register, contact Eleanor Beerman.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center program, The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad Program, is accepting applications to audition for their touring roster. The program supports touring and cultural exchanges of U.S. musical groups in a variety of genres including jazz, urban/hip-hop, blues, bluegrass, Cajun, gospel, zydeco, and country. Deadline: 09/15/08.
4Culture is seeking an artist or artists from Washington, Oregon, or British Columbia for two public art projects in the King County Correctional Facility lobby. Desired artwork will honor the activities of the jail, inspire hope, and introduce a sense of humanity and care. Selected artist(s) will be expected to coordinate with personnel to determine security requirements. Deadline: 09/15/08.
The City of Olympia is seeking an experienced Washington State artist to create exterior artwork for the new City Hall. Based on a jury of recent work, up to three finalists will be engaged to create a conceptual proposal based on the 30% architectural design, for review by the original jurors. Finalists will receive $5,000 for their proposals. The total budget for the project is $180,000 all inclusive. Deadline: 09/19/08.
The Vermont Studio Center is offering full fellowships to four artists from each state: Indiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Washington. The program hosts 50 visual artists and writers each month from across the country and around the world. The Studio Center provides 4-12 week studio residencies on an historic 30-building campus along the Gihon River in Johnson, Vermont, a village in the heart of the northern Green Mountains. Larson Gallery, at Yakima Valley Community College, is accepting entries (PDF) for the 53rd Annual Central Washington Artists Exhibition, a juried exhibit of artists residing in central Washington. Approximately $5,000 in prize money is awarded. Deadline: 10/03/08.
Northwest Film Forum (NWFF), a Seattle-based non-profit organization serving as a center for film artists, has a number of exciting opportunities. Submit a film for the Children's Film Festival Seattle 2009 and REDCAT International Children's Film Festival. The Festival, now in its fourth year, will be held January 23-February 1, 2009 at Northwest Film Forum. Last year, the festival presented 80 films from 20 countries. Deadline 10/15/08.
The Scottsdale Public Art Program has issued a request for qualifications (PDF) for an artist to complete a time-based public artwork at the annual Scottsdale Arts Festival. The ideal candidate will create an artwork that is highly interactive and will be visually prominent in a festival setting. As a nationally known event, the arts festival occurs during the height of Scottsdale's tourist season and can draw up to 40,000 visitors. The budget for the project is $11,000. Deadline: 10/24/08.
The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2009, seeks an original graphic design for a new logo to be used on all marketing and collateral materials, such as posters, newsletters, letterhead stationery, etc., and on a redesigned website to launch at the end of the year. The artwork must include “Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council” in a creative way that conveys the Arts Council’s brand and messaging. The selected artwork and artist will be profiled on the website and to the press, and a $250 cash prize will be awarded to the selected artist. Send submissions to info@shorelinearts.net. The New Nonprofit Leaders' Boot Camp, offered by the Institute for Nonprofit Management at Portland State University, will provide up and coming nonprofit directors critical leadership skills to meet the challenges of their new positions. Participants will have the opportunity to develop a short-term plan of action to channel their optimism and energy. The event also offers advice on work-life balance, expert coaching, and peer support. The boot camp will be held September 22-26, 2008, in Corbett, OR.

EventsTieton - Mighty Tieton is hosting an open house at the new Harvest Hall, Saturday, August 23, from 1 – 3 pm, during Tieton Community Days. Everyone is invited to come take a look at Tieton’s newest venue. The fully remodeled, former church recently opened as a rental facility in this small community. Mighty Tieton is an entrepreneurial enterprise based in the Central Washington town of Tieton, fifteen miles west of Yakima.
Seattle - The Northwest Film Forum is presenting Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, August 26-27 at 6:30 and 9 pm. Spirited Away, winner of a variety of international awards including an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, is Hayao Miyazaki's best-known work. Drawing heavily on Japanese cultural influences and fairy-tale motifs, as well as children's literature classics including "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Wizard of Oz," this astonishing film tells the tale of a young girl, Chihiro, who is trapped with her parents in a strange world of spirits.
Gig Harbor - Encore! Theater is presenting My Fair Lady now through August 31 in an open-air site located adjacent to Impact Church International. It's bring your own seating and picnics are welcome.
Seattle - Shrek the Musical is playing at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre in a pre-Broadway run now through September 9.The stage production draws inspiration from the classic William Steig book "Shrek!" and from "Shrek," the 2001 DreamWorks film.
Issaquah - artEAST, a collective of Issaquah and Eastside artists, is launching an exhibit called Collective Memory II: the Spirit of Community in Art at the Up Front Gallery on September 5. For the Collective Memory project, fifteen artEAST artists partner with local community members who have helped shape the community.
The Border (North) - The Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program is pleased to present a series of afternoon concerts celebrating Asian cultures of the Pacific Northwest at Peace Arch State Park. All the concerts are free and open to the public.
This festival is part of a broader series of events celebrating Washington's diverse cultures. The Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program is a partnership between the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and the Washington State Arts Commission. Additional funding support is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Seattle - The 2008 Western Arts Alliance Annual Conference is scheduled for Sept. 1 through 5 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. The Annual Conference convenes presenters, artists, and managers around networking, artistic exploration, and discovery with the shared desire of connecting artists and live audiences. Full conference registration and one-day passes will be available on-site. |
