Grants to Organizations - Arts Participation Initiative Background

The Arts Participation Initiative began seven years ago as the Wallace Arts Participation Initiative when Washington State received a five year grant of $500,000 from the Wallace Foundation to enhance and assess arts participation. A total of 13 states received this funding.

The initiative has used a conceptual model of arts participation including efforts to deepen, broaden and diversify participants: visitor/audience members, artist/ producers and supporters/volunteers. Evaluation and documentation of these model projects expands and sustains the long-term impact of the projects locally and statewide.

Building Strong Communities through the Arts documents the first three years of the Initiative.
