Mehmed Salihovic started to perform traditional Bosnian dance in the early 1980s with the group Semberija, in Bjeljina. He worked under the supervision of his teacher Mirsad Dervisevic, one of the best folkloric choreographers in Bosnia. Eventually, Salihovic became the assistant choreographer of Semberija and won numerous awards throughout the former Yugoslavian Republic for the next several years.

In 2006, Salihovic received a Folk Arts Apprenticeship award and taught apprentice Nedim Ĉavčić traditional Bosnian dances. Cavcic used Salihov’s expertise to organize events in the community to share, teach, and pass on the tradition of Bosnian dance. Having come from the same country, both Salihovic and Ĉavčić have found this art form to be a means of preserving and sharing their culture while adjusting to the new environment of the United States.
