Folk Arts - Master Artist - Prabha Rustagi

Kathak is characterized by intricate footwork and distinct facial expressions, accompanied by tabla (drum), singers, and other instruments. Kathak, meaning "story," is performed either solo or in a group, and is presented either as classical dance or as dance drama, which depicts episodes from Indian epics. The art form requires years of dedicated training, as there are many specific elements to be mastered. As Rustagi and Helsley worked one-one-one, Helsley practiced keeping the proper rhythm with her feet, moving gracefully, and using appropriate facial expressions in order to synchronize these elements.

As a recipient of a 1993 Apprenticeship grant, Prabha Rustagi taught Shabeena Helsley Kathak dance. Shabeena acquired enough training to share her expertise with younger members of the Indian community. In this way, both Rustagi and Helsley have helped to maintain a vital link to their Indian homeland through history, art, and traditions.

Prabha passed away in 1996. Her students are continuing to study under Prabha's teacher Urmila Nagar.
