Susan Pavel began studying Puget Salish weaving under master weaver Bruce Subiyay Miller, a prominent tradition-keeper for the Puget Salish tribes. Susan’s dedication to Puget Salish weaving gave her an advantage towards mastering the craft. After finishing her first blanket, Bruce claimed the work as his own, an honor typically bestowed only after several years of teaching. After five years of study with Bruce Subiyay Susan has claimed her own Mastery and weaving style. Susan’s work has been featured in the Squaxin Island Tribal Museum, Library and Research Center during their SQ3Tsya’yay (Weaver’s Spirit Power) exhibit, as well as at the Stonington's Gallery and Snow Goose Gallery in Seattle, where her weavings were the only Puget Salish work displayed.

As a recipient of a 2003 Apprenticeship grant, Pavel taught Dalena Pavel, Susan’s sister-in-law, twill and twine techniques, carding, spinning, and how to weave traditional patterns. Like Susan, Dalena has also studied under Bruce Miller. Dalena Pavel hopes to eventually teach her children the traditional art form, preserving the tradition for future generations.
