Folk Arts - Master Artist - Marcelina Parker

Master artist Marcelina Parker has been singing and dancing traditional Makah songs and dances for most of her life. Parker began learning these songs and dances when she was three years old, practicing with her cousins, and sometimes other relatives, in her great-grandparents’ living room. Later, Parker assisted other families with their dances. She believes it is important to instruct the younger generation so that her community can maintain Makah traditions. It is important to understand the meanings of the dances; creating an understanding and between different family’s values.

As a recipient of a 1995 Apprenticeship grant, Parker taught her nineteen-year-old daughter, Stephanie Marquette, traditional Makah songs, music, and dances. Parker’s teachings focused on specific dance elements, commands involved with performing the dance, and recognition of specific songs. Marquette also took lessons in making ceremonial regalia, including gathering materials needed to construct and decorate the robes.

Stephanie Marquette first began dancing at age three. Marquette always had a curiosity for family traditions and learned a great deal about her family history through her apprenticeship. Stephanie hopes to continue upholding her heritage with pride and honor.
