Folk Arts - Master Artist - Trinidad Marquez

Violinist Trinidad Marquez of Mabton is valued in his Mexican-American community, providing many hours of volunteer service through performing and teaching music. The style of music Trinidad plays, called orcesta, originated in Michoacán, Mexico and is played by very few.

As a recipient of a 1993 Apprenticeship grant, Marquez taught Victor Campos to play orcesta music on the violin. As part of his apprenticeship, Victor performed at his church, community dances, and at nursing homes where many of the older Mexican-Americans, who especially appreciate this traditional style of music, live. Victor Campos has roots in Michoacán, Mexico, and hopes to continue and contribute to the tradition of orcesta violin music.

As a recipient of a 1995 Apprenticeship grant, Marquez continued to teach Victor Campos to play orcesta music on the violin.

Marquez received Washington State's highest artistic honor in 1998 as the recipient of a Governor's Heritage Award.
