Folk Arts - Master Artist - Trinidad Marquez

Violinist Trinidad Marquez of Mabton was a treasured member of his Mexican-American community until his death a few years ago. He provided many hours of volunteer service, performing and teaching music. The style of music Trinidad played, called orcesta, originated in Michoacán, Mexico and is played by very few.

As the recipient of a 1993 Apprenticeship grant, Marquez taught Victor Campos to play orcesta music on the violin. As part of his apprenticeship, Victor performed at his church, community dances, and at nursing homes---where many older Mexican-Americans, who especially appreciate this traditional style of music, live. Victor Campos has roots in Michoacán, Mexico, and hopes to continue contributing to the tradition of orcesta violin music.

As the recipient of a 1995 Apprenticeship grant, Marquez again worked with Victor Campos on orcesta music on the violin.

In 1998, Marquez received Washington State's highest artistic honor as the recipient of a Governor's Heritage Award.
