University of Washington Medical Center Art Program

Since 1986, the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) has presented an Art Program for the benefit and enjoyment of the community of patients, visitors, faculty, and staff.

The UWMC Art Program includes:

A permanent art collection

A vital Artist-in-Residence program

Special projects and exhibitions

Programs in literary and performing arts

The UWMC Art Program augments outstanding medical care.
UWMC believes art contributes to healing by providing a stimulating link to the world outside, and to the life force within that fuels every artistic effort. With artwork, we can develop a rejuvenating and respectful environment to nurture the entire community. The UWMC Art Program expresses respect for the hospital environment, as well as the artistic process.

Funding for the Art Program is raised through the efforts of volunteers.
Many people are surprised to learn that art program funding for regular art collection purchases and the Artist-In-Residence program does not come out of patient fees. Rather, significant ongoing support is provided by the UWMC Service League, a volunteer, non-profit organization that raises money for patient services. Service League funds are raised at two coffee carts and the gift shop at UWMC. Special projects may be funded in whole or in part by the WSAC Art in Public Places program, private foundations, and by private donors.

The UWMC Art Program is driven by the belief that the arts contribute to well-being by:

Addressing the health of the human spirit along with that of the body

Affirming our connection to society as a whole
Providing visual and cultural bridges to help us appreciate our diverse population
Helping to make UWMC warmer, stimulating, and more comfortable
Referencing the full range of human emotions and experiences that remind us we are not alone
Symbolizing and reinforcing the spirit of innovation, humanity, and revelation that is vital in teaching, medical research, and patient care

The Art Program works to make UWMC a more nurturing environment by:

Enlivening and humanizing the physical environment of the medical center
Minimizing the stress experienced in situations of medical need and trauma
Reminding us of the fullness of life, the breadth of our world, and the humanity that surrounds us
Intervening in our daily thoughts, and inspiring us to think of human connections, life experiences, and memories that we may draw on for support
