Governor's Heritage Award - Wing Luke Asian Art Museum

Wing Luke Asian Art Museum in Seattle’s Chinatown/International District was founded in 1966 to honor the first Chinese-American elected official in the continental United States. It is the only pan-Asian/Pacific-American museum in the country devoted to the collection, preservation and display of Asian/Pacific-American culture, history and art with projects inspired and created by community members. It’s highly acclaimed award-winning exhibits exemplify the museum's pioneering work in community involvement and its devotion to educating the public about the legacy of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the Northwest. Director Ron Chew’s method of working with the community and helping them tell their stories is now emulated around the country. The Wing Luke Asian Museum is not only a museum in the traditional sense, but a social force in the community. At a White House ceremony in 1995 it was honored with the National Award for Museum Service.
