Governor's Heritage Award - Mariachi Huenachi

Mariachi Huenachi, Wenatchee High School's award-winning mariachi band, carries the music of Washington's "apple capitol" around the West. Huenachi has twice been named Grand Champion in the national Mariachi Spectacular competition in Albuquerque, NM, along with being the winner of the High School Division and named the most "spirited" band. In January 2000 the band performed for the opening of the Washington State Legislature. Director Mark Fogelquist says his students, many Mexican-born, have "the best flavor" in their performances and give each performance all they have. In addition to the advanced performing group, there are also beginning classes at the high school and middle school levels. The hard work and discipline of the group makes the "Mariachi Huenachi... a source of pride for the Latino community and a welcome ambassador for intercultural relations."
