| Governor's Heritage Award - Ralph HayesRalph Hayes of Seattle, Washington taught history and social studies for over thirty years in Seattle and Bellevue high schools. He also taught ethnic history at the University of Washington and at Seattle-area community colleges. Hayes’ interest in history led him to participate in the King County Bicentennial Commission in 1976 and to help establish the Black Heritage Society. After his retirement, Hayes developed a series of research projects on African-American history in the Northwest. The Northwest Black Pioneers exhibition, which Hayes researched and curated, has been touring the Northwest since 1989. Other projects included research and writings on the history of the coal-mining town of Roslyn, and biographies of Black pioneers George Washington Bush of Tumwater and George Washington of Centralia. Ralph Hayes passed away in 1999. |
