Folk Arts - Apprenticeship Guidelines

The Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program supports the sharing of traditional arts between a master and an apprentice. These traditional arts are defined as those artistic practices which have a community base and express that community’s heritage. This includes such communities as ethnic, tribal, occupational, regional and religious groups.

The skills are usually learned informally and passed on from one generation to the next by observation and imitation. Among the many traditional folk arts of Washington State are:  Southeast Asian dance, Mexican-American embroidery, fiddling, African-American gospel singing, saddle making and rawhide braiding for working cowboys, Native American basketmaking, and logger poetry.

Those who apply must be residents of Washington State. In some cases, out-of-state masters will be considered when no appropriate master resides in state.

The application deadline was April 4, 2008. The application accessible below will be updated for the next application cycle. It is made available to provide general information about the scope of the program and the application requirements.
