Biography: Kim Newall has been working as an artist in residence, teacher trainer, teaching artist mentor and arts curriculum consultant since 1989. She received a BFA in sculpture from the University of Washington and has also studied with Roger Kukes. Newall’s work in painting, drawing and sculpture explores common structures found in natural forms such as plants and the human body. Her artwork is included in numerous collections throughout the Pacific Northwest.

When asked about her approach as a Teaching Artist, Ms. Newall wrote this: “Being a teaching artist has taught me to play and laugh. It is my favorite way of offering my artistic gifts to others. With good humor and direct experience I show students that everyone has a uniquely original mark to be made through drawing. In my classes I discuss basic design elements and the principles of design and composition. I also strive to bring the joy of drawing into the classroom. I have a quick and gentle humor that puts people of all ages at ease and gives even the most resistant students permission to claim their intrinsic creativity. Drawing is a natural way to interact with and describe not only the visible world, but also the world as it can be imagined. Albert Einstein said, 'Imagination is more important than knowledge'. I believe that our applied imagination can enliven the world.”
