Biography: As a visual artist residing in the Seattle area for almost 30 years, Stuart Nakamura’s work has evolved from painting and drawing to sculptural art forms that employ a wide variety of materials. Many of these projects are applied to the built environment as public art. Nakamura’s experience teaching art began in the 1970s when he was a Visual Arts Resource Center Specialist for the Seattle School District. He has also participated as an Artist in Residence for the Washington State, Seattle and King County Arts Commissions. In this capacity he has visited nearly 150 schools, museums and community centers, working in a wide variety of educational settings and teaching styles.

When asked about his approach as a Teaching Artist, Mr. Nakamura wrote this: “My purpose as a teaching artist is to provide a view of an artist’s working process, showing by example how artists use and manipulate resources and materials to create art. I stress that successful ideas often come after many attempts, but that the goal is worth the effort. Students’ participation validates what is, or is not, an exciting experience in this age of technological and electronic devices and communication. The simple act of screen printing or working with clay can bring out primal creative instincts, confirming our uniqueness as a species. I feel that I bring patience, humor and a non-threatening and non-judgmental approach to the creative process. These qualities engage all age groups, including teachers.”
