Biography: Beverly Harding Buehler is a printmaker and mixed media artist. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Earlham College and her Masters in African Art History from the University of Washington. For ten years she managed the Youth, Family and Art Studio programs at the Seattle Art Museum where she taught studio art to school children, wrote integrated arts curriculum for grades K-12, and developed interactive learning galleries for visitors of all ages. In addition to teaching and pursuing her own art, Harding Buehler consults on art education for museums, schools and pre-service teacher training programs. The National Art Education Association recently honored Harding Buehler naming her the 2005 Pacific Region Museum Educator of the Year.
When asked about her approach as a Teaching Artist, Ms. Harding Buehler wrote this: “I believe that interactions with original art offer students an avenue for connecting with their own creativity, at the same time that they honor our rich cultural heritages. My arts-infused lessons link concepts in the arts with concepts in other disciplines that are defined in the exact same way. For example, the radial symmetry of a Buddhist mandala means precisely the same thing as rotational symmetry in math, and radial symmetry in biology. One of my greatest strengths as a teaching artist is my ability to use my knowledge of the world’s art traditions to inspire students from many different cultural traditions and heritages. As an art educator, I teach students the concepts, skills and creative processes they need, not only to make art, but also to live creative, meaning-filled lives. My experience teaching and making art has also made me aware of the many ways the creative process can unfold in different people and how I can help students navigate the creative and technical blocks they may encounter. My work in curriculum writing and learning assessment in the arts has helped hone my lessons so that they are precise, achievable and assessable.”
