Biography: Louis Gervais has performed with more than 30 dance companies during his career as a professional dancer. Among his works as a choreographer, Louis has created two one-man shows of his award winning theatrical solos and a critically acclaimed interactive family show entitled Red Light Rooster! A native of the state of Maine, Louis has been well received on the faculties of the University of Southern Maine, Bates, and Bowdoin Colleges. As a teaching artist, Louis has employed dance in Building Community Through the Arts; a residency program which creates community by bringing the performance arts into rural Maine high schools. Louis received his MFA in Dance at the University of Washington in Seattle.
When asked about his approach as a Teaching Artist, Mr. Gervais wrote this: "My dance classes are fast paced, and ever changing. Whether I am doing a single day or a two week residency, I keep my classes alive by giving short, clear instructions so that the majority of the time is for dancing. I dance a lot in my classes. For beginners, it is important to see examples. I often incorporate pantomime exercises as a bridge between the specific and the abstract. I love music and have a large library that I use as I teach that often creates wonderful atmospheres. I also love to perform some of my own choreography for my students as a way opening up and connecting with them."
