Biography: For over thirty years, Terry Dew has been involved in several facets of art education. As a teacher, Ms. Dew designed curriculum and taught art classes for private galleries, public schools, community organizations, the Tacoma Art Museum, and teacher in-service workshops for the Getty Institute for Educators. The students instructed have ranged in age from pre-school to senior citizen. Early in her artistic career, Ms. Dew painted portrait commissions, murals for churches and private homes, and produced quirky commercial assignments for local businesses and community organizations, such as: a kennel club, sports teams, and events. Her artistic evolution continued through teaching; establishing an art store gallery; and producing private commissions. Recently retired, Ms. Dew is dedicated to pushing the limits in her development as an artist.
When asked about her approach as a Teaching Artist, Ms. Dew wrote this: “It is my belief that we are all born artists yearning to communicate and express ourselves through a visual medium. Unfortunately, most become discouraged and give up doubting their talent and ability before entering high school. As a teaching artist, I open doors. It is my avocation to recognize, encourage and nurture the artistic talents of my students and design curriculum which will promote their visual literacy. It is my responsibility to provide age and skill level appropriate instruction which will enable my students to have a successful experience and a deeper appreciation of art. I espouse the DBAE Philosophy (Discipline Based Art Education) which provides structure for art curriculum and facilitates interdisciplinary instruction. It is my experience that each age group presents their own unique challenges and result in their own, sometimes unexpected, rewards both for the students and the artist-teacher. I am invigorated by the vitality and curiosity of pre-school and elementary children as well as the proud beam of accomplishment by students of any age. I am a life long learner continuing to evolve as an artist, who has the privilege of sharing my passion for art through teaching. ”
