Biography: Karin Vance Chickadel’s love of creating led her to study art in primary school and high school, then college and graduate school. After working in sculpture for some years, she discovered the niche of artist’s books while earning her MAAT at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She went on to focus her studies in book making at Columbia College Chicago, where she earned her MFA in Book and Paper Art in 2005. While at CCC, she began teaching basic binding methods. She found she truly enjoyed passing on this craft she had become so passionate about. She continues teaching book arts in school age programs and community centers. Today she lives and works in the Seattle area with her husband and 2 young children.
When asked about her approach as a Teaching Artist, Ms. Chickadel wrote this: "My purpose as a teaching artist is to make creating art accessible and approachable. I believe in the power of making things with your own two hands. I believe in the sense of pride and accomplishment that art making brings to a person. As a teaching artist I want to introduce the niche of book arts and help people expand their idea of what a book can be. At the same time I want to help people see themselves as artists and expand their definition of what an artist can be. Finally, I want to help people reap the social and emotional benefits of making art. I have worked with K – 9 students in public schools, public libraries, after school programs, summer camps and community environments, and K-12 students in independent schools."
