Biography: Sherry Buckner has been a professional artist for nearly three decades. She works in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art media. She has exhibited widely, and in 2000 she was awarded the Peninsula Art Association’s First Prize in Sculpture. Her work resides in both public and private collections. Buckner was a grant writer and facilitator for the Art and Environmental Education program in the Tumwater School District and has been on the Olympia Arts Commission’s Roster of Professional Artists. She has taught students of all ages, completing residencies in public schools and art centers, as well as teaching through South Puget Sound Community College and The Evergreen State College.
When asked about her approach as a Teaching Artist, Ms. Buckner wrote this: “My goals as a teaching artist are to engage children with their natural ability to create images that are unselfconscious and to make children feel successful. I want them to learn about themselves and their subject through art making. I create lessons that effortlessly teach students to overcome ordinary visual art obstacles. They involve both structure and open-ended lessons. I employ several simple drawing exercises in the classroom to increase hand/arm to eye coordination, familiarize students with simple elements of drawing and painting and stimulate the student’s ability and ease in using the whole page as a composition. I also use visualization with students to encourage the use of their own personal memories, imagination and ideas. I demonstrate in each class, articulating how I am thinking spontaneously about my choices, letting the artwork evolve through a process of association. I believe that being able to draw the world around you is empowering and will increase the student’s sense of personal connection and caring for themselves, their community and the environment.”
