When asked about her approach as a Teaching Artist, Ms. Barnes wrote this: "My philosophy as a teaching artist reflects my interest in creating opportunities for students of all ages and abilities to experience the art form of dance. I believe in providing a challenging and open learning environment that is non-threatening and accessible, both physically and socially. I want students to discover new ways of expressing themselves. I strive to guide students in their self-discovery, empowering them to take risks and be active in their own learning. I encourage students to make connections between dance and their personal experiences in order to discover their own creative voice. I work to ensure students experience personal satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment as a result of their efforts. My lessons include multiple opportunities for students to work alone and in groups. They engage in dance as performers, choreographers, and audience. I value and welcome collaboration with classroom teachers, classroom curriculum links, and other arts disciplines."
