Poetry Out Loud 2006 - Arts in EducationState Final
On April 6th, 2006 eight students from high schools in Thurston County competed in Washington's first Poetry Out Loud State Final. The final took place at the Minnaert Center for the Arts, South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia.
Reciting Dudley Randall's, "The Ballad of Birmingham" and Maya Angelou's "Still I Rise," Mollie McComb, a student from Rainier High School was awarded first place. Ms. McComb received $200 from the Poetry Foundation, an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to represent Washington State in the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Competition, and a $500 stipend for her school to spend on the purchase of poetry books.
Carly Holbrooks, a student at Olympia High School, and Blake Lugar, a student from Avanti High School, tied for second place. They each received a $100 prize from The Poetry Foundation, and their schools received a $200 stipend for the purchase of poetry books.
