State Arts Commission supports NEA Creative Forces Program

August 10, 2017

At its regular Commission meeting held August 1-2, 2017, the board of the Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA) passed a resolution in support of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Creative Forces Healing Arts Network. The resolution was introduced by outgoing board chair Bassem Bejjani.

Since 2011 the NEA, in partnership with the Department of Defense, has supported creative arts therapies at two military medical facilities in the Washington, DC, area—the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) at Walter Reed Bethesda in Maryland, and the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia. In FY2017, the network was expaned to include 11 clinical sites across the nation, inccluding Madigan Army Medical Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma.

ArtsWA is working closely with community stakeholders, local arts organizations, and nonprofit partners to develop community-based arts programs that will support the work being done at Madigan Army Medical Center. In addition to military service members, these programs will be available to their families, caregivers, and local veterans. ArtsWA will hold a Creative Forces summit in September to increase community participation.
